The Envelope You Never Opened

An unopened bill does not stop growing. It grows faster than an opened one, because reminders and late fees get added on top.

Gather everything you have been putting off into one place: envelopes in the drawer, emails flagged «later», bank messages you swiped away. Pick one — the one you dread most. Open it and read it to the end, including the small print at the bottom, where the deadline usually sits. Write three things on paper: the amount, the final date, who to call or write to. Take exactly one step today — send the email with your question, phone them, ask for an instalment plan, or simply pay if the amount is manageable. Leave the other envelopes alone; they are for another day.

What is inside is nearly always less terrible than the fantasy, and that brings irritation with yourself rather than relief: all those weeks spent guarding an empty box. Skip the self-recrimination, just note how long the envelope lay there, and take the next one tomorrow. If it really is bad — overdue, handed to collections, penalties added — today's step is still the only right one: a debt you know about has deadlines and rules, a hidden one has neither. Call the creditor first; almost everywhere, someone who makes contact themselves gets a different conversation.
