What to do
Catch the moment the event ended for you: the talk starts looping, there is nothing left for you there. Do not sit it out to be polite. Stand up, say it briefly — I need to go, thank you, it was good — and say goodbye to the host. Do not explain your reasons and do not invent an urgent errand. Leave straight away, without a second round of goodbyes at the door.
