No to the One You Never Refuse

There is one address where your yes is issued automatically: a mother, a boss, an old friend, someone you owe. As long as that address exists, all your other no’s are worthless — they are simply not about the real thing.

Name that person to yourself honestly, in ten seconds — you know who it is. Wait for their next request today, however small, and refuse it. One formula: no, I cannot today. No illness, no traffic, no invented workload, no promise to make up for it tomorrow. If no request comes today, go back to the last one you never did and say you will not be doing it. Do not write a paragraph — say it aloud or send one line with no emoji.

Most likely nothing collapses, and you spend the evening waiting for a punishment that never comes — that waiting is exactly what you have been paying with all these years. If they are genuinely hurt, do not rush to fix it the same day: wait twenty-four hours and see what is left. If the no did not come out, write down what your own head threatened you with; next time that is the thing to test.
