A Cash-Only Day
medium micro quest 480 min +40 XP
Withdraw a fixed sum in cash in the morning, leave the card and phone payments at home, and live the day on it.
Why this matters
A card removes the sense of parting with money: the brain does not register a spend until the amount physically shrinks. Cash gives that signal back in a single day.
What to do
The evening before, work out what you actually need tomorrow and add a little for the unexpected. In the morning withdraw that sum in cash and leave everything else at home: the card, the wallet on your phone, the watch that pays. Pay for everything in notes and coins: transport, coffee, lunch, groceries. Each time before paying, take the money out and look at what is left — that moment is the task. At the end of the day count the remainder and write down two things: what you spent and what you skipped because handing over a note felt like too much. If card payment is effectively mandatory where you live, carry one card for emergencies but use it only where cash is refused, and note every such time.
Afterwards
You will most likely spend less than on an ordinary day, not through discipline but because you watched the stack shrink. The second typical sensation is awkwardness at the till: the queue waits while you count coins — that is the price of convenience you normally pay in silence. Do not turn the day into asceticism and do not be proud of the leftover; the task was not to save money but to get the feel of a sum back. If the day fell apart (you left the card at home and got stuck, an app-only payment), just note where the system left you no choice: that is an honest result too.
