Find out where the Hawaiian reconciliation practice comes from, then do the four-phrase version
Why this matters
In the original, hoʻoponopono is a Hawaiian family procedure for settling conflict: people sit down together and talk the grievance through out loud. The four-phrase version that spread across the internet appeared much later and is done alone. What works in it isn't magic but the same thing as in any practice of saying things out loud: an unspoken grievance stops circling once you finally put it into words.
What to do
First spend fifteen minutes reading what hoʻoponopono actually is — the Hawaiian family reconciliation practice and its later solo version. Don't trust the first article; compare two or three. Then sit alone and bring to mind a specific person or situation that still scratches. Hold it there and say the four phrases to yourself, slowly: "Forgive me. I'm sorry. Thank you. I love you." Repeat as many times as it takes for them to stop feeling mechanical. This requires neither meeting the person nor forgiving what they did — it's only about stopping carrying it in silence.
Afterwards
Who were those four phrases actually addressed to — that person, or you?
