Once, name a price for your work higher than usual — and go silent after it.
Why this matters
Your usual rate was usually set not by the market but by the moment you last got scared of a no. Since then nobody has revised it except inflation.
What to do
Take the next conversation where you have to name a price: a job, a side gig, a consultation, a repair, a lesson. Take your usual figure and add twenty percent. Say the new price out loud or write it as one line, without softeners like roughly around and we can discuss it. And then stay silent. Do not fill the pause with a discount, do not explain how the sum was built, do not offer a cheaper option. Stay silent until they answer.
Afterwards
Some clients agree immediately — and then you see how much you have been quietly leaving on the table. If they refuse, you lost one job and gained an exact number for the ceiling, which you could never learn otherwise. If you dropped the price yourself after the pause, write down at which second that happened: next time hold out one second longer.
