Sometimes choosing a place by a silly rule is more honest than choosing correctly for another six months.

Open a map and list towns a couple of hours away whose names start with L, M or F. The rule is silly, and that is the point: it chooses for you. Take two nights, not one — the first goes on stopping thinking about work. Book a hotel in the centre so everything is walkable, and skip the breakfast package: breakfast is more interesting where the locals eat. Plan exactly one thing per day and leave the rest of the time empty. Turn the phone on twice a day, no more. As you leave, say out loud one thing you want to take home with you.
