Between someday I will go and an actual ticket there is usually one evening that never arrives.

Check your passport expiry and the visa rules first: that is where most spontaneous trips fall apart. Set a ceiling for the budget and pick the country to fit it, not the other way round. Look at departures two weeks out — tickets at that range are often cheaper than a month ahead, because unsold seats get dumped. Book it all in one evening: flight, place to stay, insurance. Do not build a day-by-day plan, three places you definitely want to see is enough. Tell someone out loud that you are going before you go to bed: a spoken plan is harder to cancel.
