Call the One You Owe

YOLO courage 45 min +120 XP

Call the creditor yourself and ask for a payment plan — before they call you.

Why this matters

While you stay silent, the arrears speak for you. Almost everywhere, the person who calls first gets different terms — not out of kindness, but because collection costs the creditor money.

What to do

Pick one debt you are already late on, or about to be. Before you dial, write three numbers on paper: what you can realistically pay per month, when your next money arrives, what you could pay today. Call the creditor's official number and say it plainly: I cannot keep to the schedule, I want to arrange something. Do not explain your reasons at length and do not apologise twice — give your three numbers and ask what options exist: instalments, a payment holiday, waived late fees, a reduced monthly amount. Write down the name of the person you spoke to, the date and what was agreed. At the end, ask for the arrangement in writing, and do not hang up until you have heard yes, we will send it.

Afterwards

The first thirty seconds are the worst; after that it usually turns ordinary — on the other end sits someone taking their hundredth call of the day, with no intention of shaming you. What often follows is tiredness rather than relief: you spent more energy on that call than on a week of worrying. If they refuse, or offer terms you cannot carry, ask for the refusal in writing and ask who to escalate to; free debt advice exists in most countries and this letter is exactly what you bring to it. If you could not dial at all, send the same three numbers by email — the same step, only slower.
