The Silence After
medium courage 20 min +40 XP
Ask for something, then stay silent. No softening, no excuses, until they answer.
Why this matters
A request is rarely killed by the answer. It is killed by what we add right after it.
What to do
Take any request you were going to make today and put it into one sentence in advance. Say it, then go quiet. Do not add no worries either way, or I know you are busy, or an explanation of why you are asking at all. The pause will feel long — it lasts seconds. Just hold it and keep looking at them. Notice what happens inside you during that silence: the urge to laugh, to look away, to fill it with words. Let the other person speak first, whatever they say.
Afterwards
Why am I so quick to soften my own asks — whose reaction am I bracing for?
