Why this matters
We talk to service staff in short commands and barely see them. Twenty minutes of attention is worth more than a tip.
What to do
Pick someone whose work usually goes unnoticed: a waiter, a cashier, a cleaner, a security guard. Start by making eye contact, saying hello and giving your own name if it fits. Read the name badge and use the name — that alone changes the whole conversation. Ask one question about their work rather than about your order: how long they have been here, which shift is hardest, what annoys them most. Do not rush off at the first pause and do not check your phone while they answer. At the end, thank them for something specific, and do not swap the conversation for a tip.
