Language bridge
medium connection 20 min +60 XP
Say thank you in the native language of a person from another country.
Why this matters
Someone living abroad almost always speaks a language that is not theirs. One word going the other way is heard very clearly.
What to do
Notice what language the person near you speaks: in a shop, in a taxi, at work, in a queue. Ask calmly and without any hint of condescension where they are from and how to say thank you in their language. Ask them to repeat it and say it out loud in front of them, even if it comes out clumsy — a mistake here is not an insult, quite the opposite. Write the word down the way it sounds, not the way it is spelled, so you still have it tomorrow. Use it the same day, when you say goodbye. If it goes easily, learn hello too — more than two words at once is not worth it.
Afterwards
How did your own language sound the last time you heard it from a stranger?
