Tell story, making it up as you go
Why this matters
Improvising breaks the habit of thinking everything through before you open your mouth.
What to do
Find a listener — a child, a friend, your partner — or start a voice recording on your phone. Take three random words from what you can see around you and start the story with the first sentence, not knowing the second. One rule: do not stop and do not say no wait, let me start again. If you hit a dead end, bring in a new character or move the scene somewhere else abruptly. Get to the end in about five minutes and give it an ending, even a ridiculous one.
