Buy a guitar and write your first simple song
Why this matters
Your first song is always bad. It is not meant for listeners.
What to do
Buy a cheap guitar but a living one: go to a shop and hold several, your hands feel the difference straight away. Ask the seller to tune it in front of you and to show you how to do it yourself — nothing kills the urge faster than an out-of-tune guitar. In the first week learn four chords, Am, C, D, G, and the changes between them, not whole songs. Your fingertips will hurt for about five days, then the skin toughens; this happens to everyone. Build your song out of those same chords: two verses and a chorus, plain words, about something from this week. Record it on your phone and keep the recording, even if it came out badly.
Afterwards
What did I stop trying the day I decided I had no ear for music?
