Why this matters
A song feels like something only other people can make. In fact it is three chords and one honest line.
What to do
Start not with music but with one line you want to repeat — that will be the chorus. Take three or four chords that sound good together and hum over them wordlessly until a melody shows up. Then write a verse about something specific: one evening, one person, one street — general words kill a song instantly. Keep the shape simple: verse, chorus, verse, chorus is enough. Record rough takes on your phone every day, even the bad ones, so you hear where it is going. At the end record the final version in one take and play it to one person without apologising in advance.
