A role in a group is convenient because it hides how you are actually feeling.
What to do
Pick a group where you have a role: the joker, the peacemaker, the one who rescues an awkward pause. Agree with yourself not to play it for one evening. When the silence turns awkward, do not fill it. When an argument builds, do not smooth it over. When you feel a joke coming, stay quiet and count to five. Watch who picks up the job instead of you.
