What to do
Imagine you had to speak at this person's funeral and put together a short eulogy in your head. Take one or two sentences from it — the most precise ones, where you say what they have been for you. Now say them to them today, while they are alive: on the phone, at the table, in the doorway, it does not matter. Do not turn it into a joke and do not add anyway, listen to me at the end. Say it plainly and stop, let the words hang there. They may get awkward — that is fine, awkwardness passes and what was said stays.
