Why this matters
Every evening a dozen things happen in the city that you don't yet know you don't need.
What to do
Open the city listings or a local group and see what's on today or tomorrow. Choose not what you like but what you know nothing about: a talk on mosses, a board game tournament, a gig by a band you've never heard of, a market, an exhibition opening. Don't read reviews and don't look up the programme in advance, that's the whole point. Turn up on time and stay at least half an hour, even if you want to leave in the first five minutes. Talk to one person there, however briefly. On the way home decide what you think of it, now you have an opinion instead of a guess.
