Injera with wat

calm growth 90 min +100 XP

Ethiopian sour flatbread instead of a plate and cutlery. Tear a piece, scoop the stew, eat with your right hand

Why this matters

Eating with your hands from a shared tray is about how quickly you stop being self-conscious around other people.

What to do

The simplest route is an Ethiopian or Eritrean restaurant — injera is made from teff with a three-day ferment and rarely works the first time at home. Order a combination rather than one dish: doro wat with chicken, misir wat of lentils, vegetables, and it all arrives on one round tray laid over the flatbread. There will be no cutlery, and you shouldn't ask for any. Tear a piece of injera with your right hand, pinch a bit of stew with it and lift — you don't reach for shared food with the left hand, that matters here. Eat from the sector of the tray in front of you, not across the table, and don't lick your fingers over the shared food. By the end the bread under the stew has soaked up the sauce — that gets eaten too, and that's the finish.

Afterwards

Was the awkwardness about your hands — or about everyone eating from one plate?
