Why this matters
Flowers are given on dates, which is why they mean almost nothing. A plant for no reason reads completely differently.
What to do
Pick someone who is not expecting anything from you: a neighbour, a colleague, the cashier at the corner shop, your mother. Buy something that will live rather than a bouquet headed for the bin: a potted plant, a couple of bulbs, a cutting from your own windowsill in a jar of water. Ask at the shop how forgiving the plant is — not everyone will look after it well. Add a two-line note: how to water it and why you brought it. Hand it over without making a ceremony of it: put it down, say it, leave.
