Why this matters
The first answer is usually the polite one. The real one comes if you ask a second time.
What to do
Ask someone close your usual question — how are you, how was your day. They will give the standard answer: fine, nothing much, as usual. Do not move on and do not glance at your phone: look at them and ask the same thing again, calmly and without pressure — and how are you really. Then be quiet and wait, even if the pause stretches half a minute. Listen to the answer to the end, without giving advice and without telling them how it was for you. Saying thank you for telling me at the end is enough.
