Paan
spicy courage 30 min +140 XP
An Indian betel-leaf parcel with spices. Take the version without tobacco and without areca nut — leaf and filling only
Why this matters
Sometimes asking what a thing is made of is enough to make a ritual safe and still leave it a ritual.
What to do
Look for a paanwala in an Indian neighbourhood or an Indian shop with fresh betel leaves; order meetha paan and say clearly: no tobacco and no supari, just the leaf and the filling. That isn't politeness: areca nut and tobacco are carcinogens, while the leaf with a sweet filling is harmless. Inside there will be gulkand of rose petals, coconut, fennel seed, date paste, sometimes a thread of mint. The parcel goes into the mouth whole, without biting it, and is chewed slowly for a minute or two. The peppery, slightly bitter taste of the leaf comes first, and only then the sweetness and the cool of the fennel. It's eaten after a heavy meal rather than as dessert — try it exactly that way, the difference is clear.
Afterwards
Where else do you go along with 'how it's done' without asking what's in it?
