At work we sit for years next to people whose job title is all we know about them.
What to do
Pick a colleague you deal with on tasks but have never talked to just for the sake of it. Invite them to lunch today or tomorrow — short, no explanation: want to grab food. At the table, keep off tasks and deadlines for at least the first ten minutes: ask how they ended up in this line of work, what they do at weekends. Listen without steering it back to yourself. If a pause comes, do not fill it with work — it passes on its own.
